Last week our class was doing some problem solving. We were learning how to solve multiplication problems by using different strategies.
Here is one of my questions that I solved with my maths mate.
Louis was practising his football shooting, so that he could get some goals on Friday for Winter Sport. He practiced at night on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Each night he shot 29 goals. How many goals did Louis shoot in total?
I have decided to use the strategies place value and rounding and compensating.
Here is my place value strategy:
3 x 29 = ?
/\
20 9
3 x 20 = 60
3 x 9 = 27
60 + 27 = 87
Here is my rounding and compensating strategy:
3 x 29 = ?
+(3 x 1) = 33 x 30 = 90
90 - 3 =87
I hope you learnt a different way to solve a multiplication problem.
Its great that you used two strategies, which one did you prefer?
